Networks like Yelp, Wikipedia and Trip Advisor grew so fast with little or no advertising, because they provide a way to connect people with the information they want. With Recycle Coach, county and municipal recycling programs now have their own network, where residents can access recycling information and education, customized for where they live.
Voice search, chatbots, and digital assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant are the ‘next big thing’, and they will completely change recycling outreach and education. Imagine if getting information was as easy as asking for it out loud. It’s already here. The implication for local governments, is that soon there will be no need for a resident to visit their website. Which begs the question: Where will the information Alexa provides come from?
